Shoe sizes in different systems rarely correspond with each other on a one-to-one basis. The underlying differences, how the results are rounded and manufacturer preferences all play a role in whether a particular shoe will fit you. Therefore: Errors and omissions excepted – no liability assumed.
Which countries use which shoe size system?
The converter lets you compare Mondopoint (mm), European, UK and US shoe sizes. But which countries use which system? And which have their own?

India – proposed bharat system
As I was preparing this shoe size converter website in autumn (fall) 2025, I learned that the Indian shoe industry has prepared draft proposals for its own shoe sizing system – bha (bharat). Subject to approval, introduction was proposed for ‘by the end of 2025’. However, at the time of writing, this is still a draft proposal.
India currently uses the British, US and European systems (!), but Indians apparently often have wider feet than westerners, meaning it can be difficult to find shoes that fit well. And because Indians are generally not as tall, some of the larger UK, US and European sizes are not needed.
The industry decided it could manufacturer fewer sizes, but which are better suited to Indian feet.
After scanning the feet of 100,000 people in different parts of India, the draft proposes only eight sizes, which use uppercase Roman numerals.

Convert shoe sizes to/from inches
To convert from inches, multiply your foot length in inches by 25.41, to find its length in millimetres. Round this up to the next multiple of 5. This is your Mondopoint size, which you can enter in the converter or find in the table.
Example:
Foot length: 10½ inches × 25.41 = 266.805 mm. Next Mondopoint size: 270. Enter this into the converter.
To convert to inches, use the converter to find your size in Mondopoint and divide this by 25.41 to get a rough idea of your foot size in inches.
What is Mondopoint?
The Mondopoint shoe sizing system was developed in the 1970s by the International Organization for Standardization.
It is used in the sports industry, for sizing:
- athletic shoes
- ski boots
- skates
- pointe ballet shoes
and is also used in countries including:
- Japan
- Taiwan
- South Korea
- Russia
as well as by some military organisations.
How does it work? It’s breathtakingly simple, being based on foot size in millimetres. Your foot is 250mm long? Your Mondopoint shoe size is 250. 252mm long? You need the next Mondopoint size up: 255.
Some shoes may also be labelled with a width: 250/100 means foot length 250mm and foot width 100mm.
No complicated calculations based on English measurement systems from hundreds of years ago!
If only the whole world used this system. But then shoe size converter websites would go out of business.
Why are shoe size conversions sometimes unreliable?
Yeah, I know what you mean. I grew up in the UK, where I’m a size 10, but live in Germany. UK size 10 is theoretically a European 44, but in practice I buy size 45 or sometimes even 46.
There are a few reasons why shoe size conversions aren’t always a reliable indicator that a shoe will actually fit you. In short:
Different measurement systems were developed in different countries. And then other countries adapted those systems for their own use.
Even how the different systems calculate shoe sizes is different. These are based on:
- the length of the foot
- the length of the shoe’s inner cavity
- the length of the last – the foot-shaped template over which a shoe is made.
Sometimes, the width of the foot or shoe is also considered.
And different manufacturers have their own preferences. Just because you wear a certain size of your favourite brand of trainers (sneakers) doesn’t mean to say you’d need the same size of a rival brand.
No wonder shoe size conversion is such a complicated business. You may be converting from a size based on the length of the shoe to one based on the size of its inner cavity. And the figures have to be compared and maybe rounded up…
How to measure your feet for shoes
- Stand barefoot on a flat surface, making sure your body weight is equally distributed.
- Measure from the end of your longest toe to the most prominent part of your heel.
To measure your foot width, follow the same instructions but measure the widest points of your foot.
